New ICM Curriculum: Supporting Excellence receives GMC approval
The Faculty are delighted to announce that the new ICM Curriculm: Supporting Excellence has now officially been approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) and as such, it will be implemented on 04 August 2021. However, for those wishing to submit an application to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) for ICM, you will have to allocate evidence against the new ICM curriculum from 04 December 2020. The CESR guidance on our website will be updated shortly to reflect this.
We would particularly like to thank all members of the Curriculum Working Party, the Training, Assessment and Quality Committee, the ICM training community, our partner Royal Colleges, the GMC and everyone that contributed to the consultation process for helping us reach this important milestone.
ICM Curriculum: Supporting Excellence
Dr Chris Thorpe, Chair, FICM Training, Assessment and Quality Committee
“We hope that our new outcomes based curriculum, comprising 14 High Level Learning Outcomes (HiLLOs) will reduce the burden of assessment for trainers and trainees. We have moved away from using prescriptive numbers of assessments to ensure the focus is on quality over quantity. We understand too much change can be unsettling, especially in the current climate, so we will endeavour to support our hard working trainees and trainers through this process as best we can.”
Further work is already taking place to underpin the delivery of the new curriculum:
- The Faculty is developing comprehensive guidance and resources for trainees and trainers to guide them through the changes so they know what is expected.
- Along with our partner colleges we will develop updated guidance for the dual CCT programmes with the new outcome based curricula.
- We have also begun creating the new curriculum in the Lifelong Learning Platform as part of developing the new ICM ePortfolio system. We hope to be able to share screenshots with you soon.
We would like to encourage everyone involved in the ICM training programme to begin familiarising themselves with the new curriculum and should you have any queries regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact us.
