Completion of Training and CCT/CESR-CP Guidance
The Faculty monitors the progress of all trainees within the training programme. The purpose of doing this is to ensure that trainees receive a balanced programme and that on completion of the GMC approved programme, a recommendation for the award of a CCT or CESR-CP can be made to the GMC.
If you are eligible to apply for entry to the Specialist Register with a CCT or a CESR-CP, your respective Royal College (for Dual or Joint ICM trainees)/Faculty (for Single ICM Trainees) will notify the General Medical Council (GMC) of your completion of training date during your final year of training.
The Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration Combined Programmes (CESR-CP) is a simplified application process for doctors appointed to a training programme intended to lead to a CESR-CP for specialist registration. It is awarded by the GMC to those trainees who have not completed a GMC approved training programme in its entirety.
Please note that the award of a CCT and inclusion on the Specialist Register are NOT automatic procedures; you are required to apply for your CCT or CESR-CP Certificate. It is a legal requirement for you to be on the Specialist Register before taking up a substantive or honorary NHS consultant post.
Steps to certification
For Single/Dual Trainees
Towards the end of the CCT/CESR-CP training programme, trainees will undergo a final summative assessment and, if successful, will be issued with an ICM ARCP Recommendation for Completion of Training (Outcome 6) by their assessment panel. The ARCP recommendation will be logged in the ICM e-portfolio by the assessment panel or deanery administrator. Although there may be slight variations between regions, the assessment panel should be convened about three months before a trainee's provisional date for completion of training.
For Joint Trainees
Trainees will be given a paper copy of the ICM ARCP Outcome 6 Recommendation that you will need to send to the Faculty at: contact@ficm.ac.uk. Please then see Steps 4, 5, 6.
Step 2
For Single/Dual Trainees
Once trainees have achieved an Outcome 6 for their ICM ARCP Recommendation for Completion of Training, the trainee’s ICM Regional Advisor will complete the Stage 3 Certificate on their ICM e-portfolio.
Step 3
For Single/Dual Trainees
Trainees who are within four months of their completion date should complete the FICM Notification of Completion of Training Form (attached at the bottom of this page), obtain all the necessary signatures and then EMAIL the completed form to FICM at: contact@ficm.ac.uk. Paper forms will not be accepted. Please include your core training posts as this forms part of your Stage 1 training.
For Single Trainees
Once the Notification Form, Stage 3 Certificate and the ARCP Outcome 6 have been received, the Faculty will sign off the trainee’s ICM training and will formally make a recommendation to the GMC for the award of a CCT or CESR-CP. The trainee will also receive an e-mail from the Faculty, advising them of the recommendation for the CCT/CESR-CP.
For Dual Trainees
Once the Notification Form, Stage 3 Certificate and the ARCP Outcome 6 have been received, the Faculty will sign off the trainee’s ICM training and inform the respective Royal College who will then formally make a recommendation to the GMC for the award of a CCT or CESR-CP. The trainee will also receive a letter from the respective Royal College’s Training Department, advising them of the recommendation for the CCT/CESR-CP.
For Joint Trainees
Once the ARCP Outcome 6 has been received, the Faculty will sign off the trainee’s ICM training and inform the respective Royal College who will then formally make a recommendation to the GMC for the award of a CCT or CESR-CP. The trainee will also receive a letter from the respective Royal College’s Training Department, advising them of the recommendation for the CCT/CESR-CP.
The Faculty will be launching a mentoring scheme to provide new Consultants with a mentor (outside of their hospital) to offer guidance and help support people establish themselves in the role.
