Multiple Consultant Report

What is the MCR?

The FICM Multiple Consultant Report (MCR) is a clinical assessment tool designed to gather structured, constructive feedback from senior trainers (consultants) who have worked with an Intensivist in Training (IiT). Now in its third iteration, the MCR supports the 2021 ICM Curriculum: Supporting Excellence and is being piloted nationally.

The MCR enables Educational Supervisors (ESs) to form holistic, triangulated judgements about an IiT’s progress against the High-Level Learning Outcomes (HiLLOs) in the ICM Curriculum, especially when the ES has not worked directly with the IiT. It is not a multisource feedback (MSF) tool; it focuses solely on clinical and educational input from consultant trainers.

Why It Matters

The MCR offers valuable consultant-level insights that support educational development and clinical performance review in line with the outcomes-based curriculum. It enables earlier intervention, recognises achievement, and supports ESs in forming defensible judgements.

Key Features
  • Designed around feedback from consultants who have directly supervised the IiT.
  • Supports ESs in forming judgements when they may not have clinically worked with the IiT.
  • Collects feedback on professionalism, patient safety, teaching, and ICM capabilities.
  • Encourages honest, non-anonymised, consultant-to-ES communication.
  • Helps identify both areas of strength and opportunities for development.
  • Recommended minimum feedback: 1 response per 3–4 consultants in the unit.
  • Consultant comments should be themed in summaries, not copied wholesale.
  • At least one MCR is expected per stage of training, with additional reports encouraged if concerns arise or more frequent feedback is needed.

MCR Workflow

For detailed instructions, see the Step-by-Step MCRF Slide Deck (PowerPoint) .

1. Initiating the MCR

  • The electronic MCR Form (MASTER template) should be duplicated by the ES (or Clinical Supervisor if the ES is remote) and saved locally.
  • Enter the IiT’s initials, set a survey response deadline, and adjust settings to allow “Anyone can respond.”

2. Distributing the Form

  • Share the unique form link via email with all consultants in the unit the IiT is currently working in.
  • Consultants complete and submit the form; responses are automatically collated in Excel format.

3. Creating the Summary Report

  • Use the MCR Educational Supervisor’s Summary Report Form to collate, interpret, and moderate responses.
  • All responses must be named, anonymous feedback should not be submitted and will not be used.
  • Comments should be themed, not listed in full. Contentious or concerning feedback should be clarified by the ES with the original trainer.

4. Final Steps

  • The ES should discuss the final summary report with the IiT and agree on an action plan.
  • Save the signed report as a PDF (typed signature is acceptable).
  • The IiT uploads the report to their LLP as a supporting document to a “Personal Activity” selecting the Activity Type “Consultant Feedback” and links it to any relevant HiLLOs in the ICM Curriculum.

Data Management Reminder

  • Once the MCR process for an IiT is complete and the summary report has been finalised and shared, the local copy of the MCR form and associated response data must be deleted from Microsoft Forms. This ensures data protection and allows a fresh form to be created for the next IiT.

FICM requests that all regions use the MCR as the standard method for gathering triangulated consultant faculty feedback. The FICM Training and Assessment Committee (FICMTAQ) will evaluate the pilot over the next 12–18 months, during which the form and process may be refined. If the pilot is successful, the data gathered will support a formal request to the GMC for inclusion of the MCR in FICM’s Assessment Strategy for the ICM curriculum and its integration into the LLP ePortfolio.

Roles and Responsibilities in the MCR Process

Faculty Tutor (FT):

  • Duplicates the electronic MCR form for each IiT using the Microsoft Forms link.
  • Names the form using the IiT’s initials and sets a suitable response deadline.
  • Ensures the form is accessible to all consultants by changing settings to "Anyone can respond."
  • Distributes the form link to the relevant consultant group in the department.
  • Monitors completion and downloads the Excel summary of responses.
  • Forwards the compiled responses to the Educational Supervisor.
  • Deletes the local copy of the form and response data from Microsoft Forms once the process is complete to maintain data security and enable use for the next IiT.

Educational Supervisor (ES):

  • Reviews the consultant feedback received (via Excel or direct summary).
  • Uses the MCR Summary Report Form to theme comments, identify patterns, and moderate where appropriate.
  • Clarifies any contentious comments with the original trainer if needed.
  • Discusses the findings with the IiT and agrees on a personal development plan (PDP).
  • Signs and shares the final Summary Report with the IiT.
  • Advises the IiT to upload the report to the LLP as a Personal Activity, categorised as “Consultant Feedback,” and link it to relevant HiLLOs.
