ACCS is a 2 year training course that normally follows Foundation Year and involves  training in General (Internal) Medicine (Acute), Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine and ICM. This is followed by further training in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia or Medical specialties with an emphasis on acute management.

The ESICM an international non profit-making association of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other allied healthcare professionals. The Society is devoted to the promotion of intensive care medicine, education, research, and professional development.

The purpose of the General Medical Council [GMC] is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine, including keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors, fostering good medical practice, promoting high standards of medical education and training, and dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt.

The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland & Tropical Health & Education Trust have led a large project mapping UK Global Anaesthetic Partnerships. Please visit the AAGBI website for further information. 

ICNARC is an independent national centre for comparative audit and research in intensive care. ICNARC's aim is to foster improvements in the organisation and practice of critical care (intensive and high dependency care) in the UK.

The Intensive Care Society [ICS] is the representative body in the UK for intensive care professionals and patients. The Society represents Intensive Care in a wide range of organisations and produces the Journal of the Intensive Care Society (JICS).

Modernising Medical Careers [MMC] aims to drive up the quality of care for patients through reform and improvement in postgraduate medical education and training. Under MMC, a new system of recruitment to Specialty Training [ST] was introduced in 2007. See the MMC site for up-to-date information.

NCEPOD assists in maintaining and improving standards of medical and surgical care for the benefit of the public by reviewing the management of patients, by undertaking confidential surveys and research, by maintaining and improving the quality of patient care and by publishing the results of such activities.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists is the professional body responsible for the specialty of anaesthesia throughout the United Kingdom. The RCoA sets standards for practice in anaesthesia and the training of postgraduate practitioners in the specialty.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine is responsible for setting standards of training and administering examinations in Emergency Medicine. The College sets and monitors standards of care, and provides expert guidance and advice on matters relating to Emergency Medicine.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is responsible for improving standards of medical care, to educate and examine doctors and provide information to the public on the health care of children.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh develops and oversees an ongoing programme of medical examinations, education and training for qualified doctors who wish to undertake further (postgraduate) education and training to pursue a career in specialist (internal) medicine.

The Royal College of Physicians of London represents 20,000 Members and Fellows and other medical professionals. The RCPL’s roles include delivering examinations, training courses, continuous professional development and conferences; undertaking clinical audits; and publishing newsletters, guidelines and books.

The RCPSG promotes best levels of health and high standards of healthcare for people throughout the World by offering continuing professional development to its Fellows, Members and other healthcare professionals.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is dedicated to the maintenance and promotion of the highest standards of surgical practice, through its keen interest in education, training and rigorous examination.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is committed to enabling surgeons to achieve and maintain the highest standards of surgical practice and patient care. The College is governed by a President and Council of elected Fellows and invited representatives.
