Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Predominantly emergency admissions, both medical and surgical. Surgical specialities in the hospital include vascular and head and neck in addition to general surgery and orthopaedics.
  • Cumberland infirmary is a trauma unit and looks after trauma patients who either self present or were unable to bypass to MTC.
  • Cumberland infirmary is remote from tertiary ICUs  for paediatrics, cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. There is a busy inpatient paediatric ward. This gives rotating resident doctors ample opportunities for transfers and stabilisation of sick children.
  • There is split site working 
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • Involved in a number of national research projects including T4P and Mosaic
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • Minimum of 2 residents during day time hours 0800-2000, one of which may be an ACCP. Medical doctor will be either an anaesthetic or ICM resident or a resident on the ACCS training programme undergoing their ICM block.
  • At night; 2000- 0800, there is one resident doctor, anaesthetics, ICM and ACCS who is supported by an anaesthetic resident who is predominantly working in theatres over night.
  • There are two consultant resident on the unit between 0800 and 1800 on weekdays and an oncall consultant outside of these times. 
 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly teaching is combined with anaesthetics and resident doctors are allocated to attend teaching without holding a bleep. 

  • Bi weekly journal clubs are a voluntary feature of the department 

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • ICU meetings with M and M occur monthly.
  • Anaesthetics and ICM audit days occur every two months. Resident doctors are encouraged to attend and will be assigned to audit days when they are due to work. 
The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within the Trust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Medicine
Other facilities: 
  • Parking permits are available to rotating doctors.
  • Those that live further away may choose to use hospital accommodation which comes with free parking.
  • There are rest facilities within the department for night shifts and rooms in the hospital for post call rest
