Reverse Mentoring
We are pleased to share the final report from the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine’s Reverse Mentoring Project — a pioneering initiative designed to improve the lived experiences of Intensivists in Training (IiTs) from ethnic minority and international medical graduate (IMG) backgrounds.
Launched in 2023, the programme reversed the traditional mentoring model by pairing Intensivists in Training as mentors to senior Faculty members. Through a series of structured, honest conversations, the project fostered mutual learning and deeper understanding of the challenges faced by ethnic minority and IMG doctors training in Intensive Care Medicine.
The report outlines:
- The structure and aims of the programme
- Reflections and feedback from both mentors and mentees
- Key learning points and an actionable agenda for change
This work forms part of FICM’s ongoing commitment to creating a fair training culture and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) across ICM training.
We are currently exploring how the learning from this project might be shared more widely, including the potential development of resources to support local or regional implementation. These discussions are ongoing, and we welcome input from colleagues who are interested in adapting the model to suit their own contexts.
