  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 95% Emergency
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Mixed medical and surgical critical care
  • Major trauma centre
  • Tertiary neurosurgical centre
  • ECMO centre for Scotland with around 25 ECMO cases per year
  • Separate Cardiothoracic ICU for mostly elective cases
  • There is no split site working within this Unit

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

Day shift is 07:30-19:45 and night is 19:00-07:45

2 tier rota with at least 1 registrar level doctor per shift (more on day shift often) and 4 others from a pool of doctors in training, ACCPs and clinical fellows (again, often more during day shift). Good mmix of doctors in training including Core and Higher anaesthetists in training, IMTs, ACCS, Core surgical trainees, and FY2s.

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:

  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies (Limited)

  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)

  • Weekly consultant facilitated tutorials and journal club
  • FICM level training jointly with Dundee 6 weekly
  • Department CPD sessions bi-monthly
  • 4 monthly project afternoons for QI
  • Monthly radiology teaching
  • Monthly MDT simulation training
  • MDT transfer course

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • Weekly CGM meeting 1.5 hours
  • Fortnightly ECMO MDT
