Unit Structure
  • Number of Beds: 12        
  • Number of Admissions per year: Level 3 - 400, Level 2 - 300
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 14% elective vs 86% emergency 
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • 40% surgical patients, general surgery, orthopaedics, urology
  • 60% non-surgical patients
  • There is no split site working at this site
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • RELEASE
  • SEPTIC 
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • 2 airway trained doctors working a 1 in 8 rota
  • 1 further non-airway trained doctor
  • Both available 24 hours. Minimum staffing agreement in place for both in and out of hours

Physio, OT, SALT, pharmacist and dietetic cover present daily

 
 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab 
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
Departmental Teaching:

  • Weekly ITU teaching 

  • Monthly M+M meetings with direct resident involvement

  • In situ sim being held monthly

  • Weekly MDT

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • Monthly meetings covering both M&M and clinical governence
The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within the Trust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and Medicine
  • SSY: QI in Healthcare 
Other facilities: 
  • On call rooms available. Office space available for resident doctors. Parking supplied to all
