Unit Structure

  • Number of Admissions per year: Level 3:600     Level 2:600
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 22% elective, 78% emergency
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Surgical specialities include common admissions of oesophogectomy, head and neck flap, gynaecological ultraradical surgery, and open AAA repair. Derby also runs a level 1 post-surgical area led by the anaesthetic Cons.
  • Medical admissions are pneumonia, sepsis, complex neurology, renal and hepatology services.
  • There is no split site working 
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • MOSAIC – in conjunction with the Renal unit
  • NURTuRE-AKI
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • Daily 2 Cons resident , out of hours on call from home
  • 3 Doctors resident 24/7, two of whom have advanced airway skills
  • 3 Associate specialists, 8 SAS, stage 3 and stage 1 ICM residents, anaesthetic CT1-3s, IMTs, ED CESR, Acute medical SpR, and ACCS residents
  • No AHPs at present
 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound - FUSIC mentors
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies (although rare)
  • Interhospital transfers in conjunction with ACCOTS
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
  • Other: Simulation, M&M presentations and SJR involvement, percutaneous tracheostomy insertion.
  • Derby use SLED for first line RRT and have weekly joint meetings with the renal unit
Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly teaching x3 delivered by residents and overseen by Cons.

  • Stage 1:  Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Medicine

  • Parking is in staff parking area short walk from building.
  • Rest facilities include staff coffee room, on call room with desk, bed and en-suite facilities, other work spaces shared with ICU MDT.
  • Vending machine in corridor, canteen open until 10pm. Local food service deliver 24/7.
