Unit Structure
  • Number of Beds:  15      
  • Number of Admissions per year: Level 3: 250   Level 2: 500
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 15% elective, 85% emergency  
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • DGH case mix
  • Emergency surgical admissions – laparotomy, major bowel resections, pancreatitis, post-partum haemorrhage
  • Emergency medical admissions – pneumonia, septic shock, CNS infection, renal/hepatic/cardiac failure
  • Elective surgical admissions
  • There is no split site working

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • Consultant Tier Staffing consists of a Continuity Consultant (Monday–Friday, daytime) and a 24-hour on-call Consultant daily.
  • Non-Consultant Tier - divided into two tiers based on skill set:

Tier 1 (Non-Airway): Includes Junior Clinical Fellows, FY doctors, CESR doctors, and ACCPs.

Tier 2 (Airway): Includes ICM/Anaesthetic Residents, Senior Clinical Fellows, and Anaesthetic/ICM SAS doctors.

  • Standard Staffing Levels: 

Daytime: Usually a minimum of two Tier 1 clinicians and one Tier 2 clinician.

Nighttime: One Tier 1 clinician and one Tier 2 clinician.

  • Anaesthetics maintains a separate rota, there is significant cross-cover out of hours to support the skill mix as required.
 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound - Including FUSIC Heart, Lung, DVT, Abdo, Haemodynamics
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab – (during in-hours emergencies. We are not a 24/7 PCI centre)
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees) Stage 3 Residents get dedicated pre-arranged acting up 24h on-call shifts 
Departmental Teaching:
  • Monthly half day ICM teaching, monthly half day Anaesthetic teaching, both delivered by trainers and residents, covering a wide variety of topics 

  • 6 monthly MDT Simulation afternoon 

  • 6 monthly Critical Care Communications course

  • Ad-hoc tea trolley teaching

  • Monthly Critical Care Clinical Governance Meetings and M&M – dates released in advance 
The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within the Trust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, ICM and Medicine

  • Parking available for rotating Residents
  • Recliner chairs in rooms available for clinicians working night shifts
