Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Stepping Hill ICU is a mixed general surgical and medical unit with tertiary urology robot-assisted surgical cases. We see a broad spectrum of general medical critical illness and our elective surgical care programme yields amongst the highest quality outcomes in the country. Of our last year’s 800 admissions, 465 were surgical, 335 were medical.

Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • Stepping Hill actively participates in research. We are currently recruiting into Awake Prone and commencing enrolment to the RELEASE study.
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • Our rota is made up of two tiers – airway trained, and non-airway trained, including ACCPs. Our Resident Doctor mix includes all grades from FY1s through to pre-CCT STs/advanced trainees.
 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
Departmental Teaching:

  • We have both peer-led handover teaching and a regular rota for Consultant and senior trainee-led teaching sessions

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • We have quarterly governance and 8 Morbidity and Mortality and audit meetings per year.
The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within the Trust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, ICM and Medicine
  • SSY: Critical Care Echo, Education 
Other facilities: 
  • We have dual rest spaces for the two trainees undertaking out of hours work and access to vending machines, including hot food, for food and drinks 24 hours per day.
  • Parking is available on site though is first come first served, and requires staff permit – which will be arranged through the induction process.
  • We have a seminar room for educational use and spare computers for CPD/SPA activities
