Unit Structure
  • Number of Beds: 10                    
  • Number of Admissions per year: 450
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 10% elective, 90% emergency
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • There are ~450 admissions per year which are mixed medical and surgical cases in ICU.
  • There are a range of referrals; predominantly emergencies from ED, acute admission units, cardiac arrest calls, trauma, obstetric emergency, paediatric emergency calls and surgical complications.
  • There are adjacent 8 bedded SHDU and MHDU areas which are run by medical and surgical specialties with frequent input from ICU staff.
  • There is no split site working within this Unit
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:

RCT – OPTIMISE 2 (theatres and critical care), MARCH Trial, Post ICU follow up and rehabilitation (INSPIRE) QIPs: Alarms and Sleep in ICU, Peri-operative hypotension,

ABC Post ICU Transfusion trial

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

The resident medical trainee rota is band 1a on a 6 person rota.

The on call day shift 08:00 to 20:30, night shift 20:00 to 08:30, normal day shifts are 08:00 to 16:00.

Currently 2x ACCPs supporting ICU and Surgical HDU areas.

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound 
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience 
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers 
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees) 
Departmental Teaching:
  • Tuesday am ICM consultant ICM tutorial
  • Wednesday ICM joint digital journal club
  • Thursday pm Radiology meeting and afternoon ICM Educational / M+M meeting

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • Weekly M+M
  • Monthly joint anaesthesia / ICM clinical governance meetings
  • Regular  ICM senior staff meetings
  • Monthly trauma meetings – EM, ICM, surgery
  • Input into Surgical M+M meetings regularly
The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within theTrust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Emergency Medicine, Medicine & Anaesthesia              
Other facilities: 
  • There is free parking that is easy to access on site.

  • There is an on call room within the ICU complex for rest.

  • Non-clinical areas to work space includes the resident doctors office, seminar room, anaesthetic department and medical education centre including the library.
