Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:

  • The Trust serves a population of approximately 220,000, with 545 beds. ICU Case mix involves the complete spectrum of critical illness, with emergency medical admissions and post operative care following emergency laparotomy making up the lions share of our work. The area around Great Yarmouth is recognized as one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Equally select holiday destinations such as Walberswick, Southwold and Beccles are within our catchment area.
  • We provide Critical Care Support to Paediatrics – these patients are often stabilized in Resus, or temporarily on the ICU, until retrieval by PANDA. These results in an occasional but intensive exposure to paediatric critical care.
  • Our Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit is the only Intensivist Led Unit in England, providing 24/7 access to HBO to ventilated patients.
  • There is no split site working within this unit
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:

AWAKE PRONE – study to ascertain in prone positioning in awake, spontaneously breathing patient with hypoxic respiratory failure prevents intubation and mortality.

GENOMICC - research study involving people with severe illness (such as Covid-19, influenza, sepsis and other causes of critical illness) to find the genetic factors that determine outcome in critical illness

The VIP3 (Very Old Intensive Care Patients) Study: Family Involvement in Treatment Decisions for Old ICU Patients (VIP3).  This study will explore How Family Meetings Implemented Across Diverse Cultures in Europe, and how these influences patient-centred outcome measures

iRehab -  will find out if a rehabilitation programme will help patients following intensive care who are discharged from hospital. Remote multicomponent rehabilitation compared to standard care for survivors of critical illness after hospital discharge: a randomised controlled assessor-blind clinical and cost-effectiveness trial.
