Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • The hospital serves a diverse local population as well as acting as a tertiary services referral centre for cardiac (including primary PCI), neurosciences (including stroke, neurosurgery and spinal surgery), haematological oncology, cystic fibrosis, hepatobiliary diseases (including transplantation) and nephrology and operates as one of the four Major Trauma Centres (MTC) within the capital. As a result, King’s has an unrivalled patient population in terms of clinical diversity and complexity.
  • The units on the Denmark Hill site are all recognised for the 3 stages of FICM training.
  • There is no split site working at this site
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • Intensive care is part of the ACERT (Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Major Trauma and Respiratory) medical research group led by Dr Phil Hopkins.
  • The ACERT Research Delivery Unit work in King's Critical Care to support the NIHR Research Delivery Network. They deliver research from the UK Critical Care Speciality Group which includes both Portfolio and Commercial Research.

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

Non-consultant medical staffing 

  • Unit resident: This consists of teams of 9 made up from CT1 to ST 7 doctors across all specialties (acute and emergency medicine, ACCS, anaesthesia, ICM, IMT). The teams work a full shift rota comprising standard, long days and nights on the intensive care units and rostered annual leave (with the ability to swap).
  • Inward facing senior fellows: This consists of 3 teams of 8 doctors who work a 1:8 shift. On Long Days or Nights these trainees provide senior cover for the unit residents.
  • Outward facing senior fellows: This consists of 2 teams of 8 doctors who work a 1:8 shift as part of the immobile team with 2 senior ICU nurses. One doctor is primarily responsible for critical care support to the wards and outlying high dependency areas (coronary care, cardiothoracic HDU, neurosurgical HDU). The other is primarily responsible for admissions from the emergency department, including trauma as well as coordinating the critical care team. There is anaesthetic support from a team of 5 resident registrars.
  • ACCPs: team of trained ACCPs who provide support on the units and to the outward facing senior role. In addition, there is also a cohort of ACCPs undergoing training at KCH. 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies – these are supported by anaesthetic team routinely however opportunity to attend in addition if desired
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab – during Stage 2 cardiac block potential to  be arranged on request, not routine
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees) 
Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly departmental teaching sessions following FICM curriculum themes – Tuesdays 2-4pm 

  • Journal club – alternate Wednesdays 2-3pm 

  • Research meeting – alternate Wednesdays 2-3pm

    In-house courses: 

  • Novice Intensivist Course: three days of seminars and a day of high-fidelity simulation 

  • Exam Preparation: Practice viva sessions for local FFICM candidates 

  • Trauma Team Members/Leaders Course 

  • Critical Airways Course

  • In addition, there are a range of courses offered by the post-graduate centre 

 

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • Weekly general ICU M&M: Thursdays 2-3.30pm
  • Weekly liver M&M including LITU cases: Tuesdays 1-2pm
  • Quarterly patient safety and outcome meetings
  • Monthly risk and governance meeting – first Wednesday, 10-12 noon
  • Twice weekly critical care PSIRF meetings, held on Monday and Thursday
