  • NUH is a busy DGH with an interesting workload. Mostly emergency cases, mix of general medicine, renal and infectious diseases.
  • The area has the highest birthrate in the UK and some very high risk maternity patients so the unit often cares for post partum patients with PPH, pre-eclampsia and other maternal emergencies.
  • The surgical admissions to the unit are in the main emergency admissions with a small number of pre booked elective cases.
  • There is 24 hour critical care outreach services, a critical care follow up team and an outreach tracheostomy team on the wards.
  • There is split site working within this Unit
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:

STUDY T4P:  Timing of platelet transfusion in patients with low platelets. We have made almost all of our doctors collaborators (GCP training, certificate of T4P training, certificate of consent, etc). Currently 7th top recruitment centre from 55 hospitals.

STUDY I-Rehab: This study has recently opened and consist on a multidisciplinary approach for our patients post-ICU. This is an important study for Newham, because it is the first study in which we involve our MDT clinic team- physio, consultant, psychologist and nursing input.

STUDY AIRWAYS 3: This study is under consideration for participation.

A randomised trial for in-hospital cardiac arrests in which whenever there is a cardiac arrest, the team will randomise in an App: to intubate or to put an LMA for the resuscitation.

GENOMICS: This study is recruiting patients that have been admitted to ICU with sepsis, to perform a blood test, and send it to the GENOMICs centre for genetic study. It is simple but it will open us another prospective study in the future (GENOMICS ACUTE) that may bring resources.
