Unit Structure
  • Number of Beds:  13 ICU, separate HDUs
  • Number of Admissions per year: Level 3: 475  
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 90% emergency
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Mixed surgical and medical unit within a Major Trauma Centre. Almost entirely level 3, with separate level 2 areas in medicine and surgery. Surgical specialties include upper GI, vascular and neurosurgery.
  • Other admissions include stabilisation of critically ill children and emergency cardiothoracic cases pending transfer to tertiary centres.
  • There is split site working 
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
  • Recruitment into multiple trials – 3rd highest recruiter in Scotland to end of financial year 2025 (1st when unit size taken into account).
  • Current trials include GuARDS, GenOMICC, TRAITS, MOSAICC. Recently REMAP-CAP. Upcoming RELEASE, INTACT-2.
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
  • 1 consultant daytime, on-site 08:00 – 18:00.
  • Resident rota includes Clinical Development Fellows and doctors training in anaesthesia/ICM/ACCS, at least one of whom per shift holds IAC. Out-of-hours there is a senior anaesthesia trainee who supports the ICU residents in the assessment and management of critically ill patients.
  • MDT includes nurses (shift lead Band 6 or 7), physiotherapists, critical care pharmacist, dietetics, occupational therapy, speech & language and trauma service psychologist.

  • Joint (South East & East) regional ICM journal club (weekly, online)

  • Anaesthesia department teaching (weekly, available for ICU residents to attend session appropriate to level of training)
