The Royal Surrey is a well-established Research active Cancer Centre. Patients are enrolled into large commercial, pharmaceutical and NIHR supported studies. In collaboration with the Surrey University and SPACER Group (Surrey Perioperative Anaesthesia Critical Care Collaborative Research Group) the hospital is growing it’s own successful portfolio. Our clinicians holds honorary lecturer positions at the University of Surrey. There are excellent opportunities to learn and participate in our research program. Current ICU Research Projects include: Multi-centre studies: ESSCAPE, CLEAR-AKI, ABBRUPT, MOSAIC, GENOMICC. Local Investigators: PHD Projects: JEDI-2, POLECAT. Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
The Critical care unit is staffed by 16 Consultant Intensivists and 24 Resident Doctors arranged in 3 tiers of seniority and 2 ACCPs. There is on site Consultant presence 7 days a week from 0800-2230h with on call arrangements outside of these times. There are typically 4-6 resident Doctors per day shift and 3 resident Doctors on overnight. A nurse led critical care outreach team is present 7 days a week from 0700-2300h. The critical care unit is supported by a dedicated MDT – including specialist pharmacists, dieticians, speech & language therapy, physiotherapists and a clinical psychologist. |

Consultant Intensivist leads the unit Clinical Governance. Robust system for incident and near miss reporting and investigations. Monthly departmental clinical governance meetings. Monthly case discussion morbidity & mortality meetings with parent team involvement. |
