Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • The critical care unit provides support for adult medical and surgical patients.

  • As a tertiary regional cancer centre the unit supports patients undergoing major cancer surgery in the following specialities (colorectal, hepatobiliary, maxilo-facial, urology, upper GI, gynae-oncology), as well as providing regional services for necrotising pancreatitis and oesophageal rupture.

  • The unit also supports the tertiary haematology / oncology service. In addition we receive the critically unwell general medical patients as per our district general hospital role.

  • Extensive experience will be gained in the perioperative management of complex high risk surgical patients across a range of surgical specialities as well as the management of complex haem-onc patients.

  • There is no split site working within this Unit

Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:

The Royal Surrey is a well-established Research active Cancer Centre.

Patients are enrolled into large commercial, pharmaceutical and NIHR supported studies. In collaboration with the Surrey University and SPACER Group (Surrey Perioperative Anaesthesia Critical Care Collaborative Research Group) the hospital is growing it’s own successful portfolio. Our clinicians holds honorary lecturer positions at the University of Surrey. There are excellent opportunities to learn and participate in our research program.

Multi-centre studies: ESSCAPE, CLEAR-AKI, ABBRUPT, MOSAIC, GENOMICC.

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

The Critical care unit is staffed by 16 Consultant Intensivists and 24 Resident Doctors arranged in 3 tiers of seniority and 2 ACCPs.

There is on site Consultant presence 7 days a week from 0800-2230h with on call arrangements outside of these times.

There are typically 4-6 resident Doctors per day shift and 3 resident Doctors on overnight.

A nurse led critical care outreach team is present 7 days a week from 0700-2300h.

The critical care unit is supported by a dedicated MDT – including specialist pharmacists, dieticians, speech & language therapy, physiotherapists and a clinical psychologist.

Training

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:               

Consultant Intensivist leads the unit Clinical Governance. Robust system for incident and near miss reporting and investigations. Monthly departmental clinical governance meetings. Monthly case discussion morbidity & mortality meetings with parent team involvement.
