  • Integrated level 2 and level 3 unit with mixed specialties throughout the unit.
  • Major trauma centre ICU including cardiothoracic trauma and neurosurgical trauma.
  • Quaternary vascular services and emergency neurosurgery services for North West London and beyond.
  • There is no split site working within this Unit
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:

Participation in numerous multi-centre international research trials, including AI trials, trauma research and sepsis.

Current trials on the unit include Septic, MAST, CRASH-4, committed, STOP-D, PANGEA, SOS, MOSAICC

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

Medical staffing for the unit consists of 3 registrar grade doctors and 3 SHO grade doctors for each long day and night shift. There are additional short day shifts on the rota which increases the number of resident doctors on weekdays. We have a mixture of HEE trainees, CESR trainees and International Fellows.

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound 
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience 
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies – can be sought, we have an onsite PICU and there is an opportunity to attend PICU ward rounds
  • Interhospital transfers 
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees) 
  • Other: Opportunity to attend echo, bronchoscopy, ultrasound departments, major trauma calls

Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly protected teaching time on Wednesday afternoons for all resident doctors in ICU in a consultant-led teaching programme

  • Opportunity to attend management meetings for senior trainees

  • Weekly bedside echocardiography teaching

  • Local simulation opportunities

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

  • Quarterly cross-site clinical governance meetings
  • 6 weeks quality and safety meeting
  • M&M open to all trainees.
The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within theTrust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Emergency Medicine, Medicine & Anaesthesia   
  • Stage 2: Neuro ICM, Paediatric ICM and Cardiothoracic ICM

Other facilities: 
  • St Mary’s Hospital is well connected to public transport links being next door to Paddington National Rail Station and close to the Elizabeth line and several London Underground lines.

  • Parking is limited but available on a case-by-case basis.
  • We offer 2 on-call rooms which are shared amongst resident doctors and sleep facilities in the resident doctor’s mess.
  • St Mary’s Hospital has a newly refurbished library and ICT facilities.
