Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:

 

  • Only 15 admissions following elective procedures, 142 emergency surgical admissions, 392 medical.
  • 209 patients needing advanced respiratory support; 1263 advanced respiratory bed-days.
  • 66 patients needing RRT. 81 needing advanced CV support, 271 CVC, 297 basic CV support.
  • There is split site working within this unit

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

3 rotas – 1 airway, 1 non-airway and 1 FY1 rota.

3 intensivists in training.

5 SAS doctors.

10 LEDs and 14 other resident doctors.

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
  • Complex burns management as part of a burns unit
  • Significant cohort of spinal injury patients (acute and chronic) as part of the national spinal injuries centre
  • As a trauma unit will see complex polytrauma, usually following repatriation from MTC
  • Established follow-up clinic with opportunities for trainees to attend
  • Excellent POCUS training with multiple cart-based machines and handheld devices
  • FUSIC mentoring and supervision available for most modules
  • Weekly ward rounds of long-term ventilation patients on the spinal unit
  • Ample potential for management experience, QI projects, business cases and audit participation
  • Teaching opportunities include Sim training (including in-situ)

 

Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly journal club followed by departmental teaching every Monday.

Governance one Tuesday afternoon each month.

M&M one Tuesday afternoon each month.
