Unit Structure

  • Number of Admissions per year: Total :1100 per annum
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 4% elective: 96% emergency
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:

 

  • Critical care admits both elective and emergency work.  Surgical case load covers General surgery, ENT, Max fax, Urology and Trauma and orthopaedics.
  • There is a busy ED and medical assessment unit which admits all medical emergencies. Neurosurgical emergencies, polytrauma and paediatrics and stabilised and transfered with support of the internal transfer service or via strong links with the adult critical care transfer team or EMERTS.
  • There is no split site working within this unit
Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:
Research is gaining momentum with a number of studies currently under review with a newly appointed research lead. Trainee research is strong via the WICS-ART group
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)
The unit is covered by a stable nursing base. There is a four tier rota system out of hours, 2 airway tiers, an ACCP tier and non airway tier. There is a mix of resident backgrounds inclusive of FP residents. IMT’s, Anaesthetics residents and IiT’s. Clinical fellow jobs are supported as well as portolio pathway. There is a cohesive collaboration within the workforce.

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)

  • Car parking is available (on occasions need to use the overflow  ~ a further 200m walk) .
  • Rest facilities are available within the hospital , and available post shift if required.
  • Hot desking space is available off the unit on a first come first served basis.
  • Hot food is available for extended hours via the canteen, with vending machines and a coffee shop in site.
