Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Modern state-of-the-art purpose-designed Unit.
  • 16 bed spaces (8 side rooms with privacy glass) 700 patients per year admitted (approx.)
  • 65% level 3; 35% level 2 patients, bed occupancy of 90-105%. 63% medical, 37% mix of elective (10%) and emergency surgical patients
  • There is no split site working within this Unit

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

Medical: - 8 consultants delivering 20 sessions of regular daytime cover Monday- Friday.

Out of hours includes predictable weekend work of full ward-round and review of all admissions.

8 doctors in training on full shift rota, background usually mix of ACCS, Core medical trainees, Acute or respiratory ST3-7 trainees.

When available also 1 supernumerary ST7 ICM trainee on separate advanced trainee on-call rota.

Full complement of nursing, physiotherapy, support, dietician, technician colleagues

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound 
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience 
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers 
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab 
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)

  • 6 days per year of regional ICU teaching
