Unit Structure
  • Number of Beds: 19 - Funded for 16 beds            
  • Number of Admissions per year: Level 3: 8    Level 2: 8    
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 90% are emergency admissions and 10% elective 
Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • The unit is funded for 16 bed and can be stretched to 19 beds to provide a mix of level 2 and level 3 services, we are a DGH with links to tertiary centres in the region, we admitted 923 patients last year,
  • There is no split site working within this Unit

We actively participating in research and had up to 10 trials last year

  • GUARDS
  • SEPTIC
  • GenOMICC
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

We have 3 IMT + ACCS ( +/- DREEM ) + 2 Core Anaesthetic Trainee + 4 Clinical fellows 

There are 4 SAS grade doctors 

1 ACCP 

No intensive care trainees in the department as of yet 

Our unit has 10 consultants, 5 intensivists and 5 are dual anaesthetics and ICM

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies
  • Interhospital transfers
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees) 
Departmental Teaching:
  • A regular weekly session delivered and organised for both consultants and residents and aimed at both core and specialty training levels

  • Fortnightly Journal club sessions
