Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:

 

  • Adult Critical Care at Whipps Cross consists of 17 beds split across two units.  All beds are commissioned to provide up to level 3 care.
  • We have over 750 admissions annually, from a broad range of medical and surgical specialties. 
  • Our surgical workload consists of emergency/unplanned care in addition, to support a healthy programme of elective urological, colorectal, upper GI, gynaecological and robotic surgery.
  • There is no split site working within this Unit

  • Rehab - Remote rehabilitation after ICU
  • Airways 3 - iGel Vs ETT for in hospital cardiac arrest
  • Awake Prone - awake proning in non-COVID T1RF patients

In the feasibility stage:

  • GuARDS - steroids in ARDS
Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

Our ‘core staffing’ consists of 2 airway trained residents from both Anaesthesia and ICM training programmes and a Critical Care Fellow.  In addition, we have resident doctors undertaking designated blocks of ICM training who contribute additional Critical Care staffing during the day.

Ours is a 1:8 rota pattern with long day shifts running 8:00-21:00 and night shifts 20:00-09:00.  Standard days run 8:00-18:00.

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound - FUSIC Heart
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies

  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees)
  • Other: Simulation

Departmental Teaching:
  • Weekly protected ICM teaching on Wednesdays, usually at 2pm.
  • ICM Case or Article of the Month. Last Friday of the month, at 2pm.
  • Intensive Care Essentials Course – February & August as part of unit induction process for those new to ICM

  • In addition to staff rest areas within Critical Care, residents have access to the Anaesthetics department which includes non-clinical workspace, on-call rest facilities and a kitchen for preparation and storage of  hot and cold food and drinks
