9.6 Monitoring of oxygen therapy and physiological targets

Published 06/06/2024

Why do this quality improvement project?

Oxygen is delivered to many patients within the intensive care unit (ICU), but too much oxygen is associated with poorer outcomes in the acutely unwell patient and this therapy must be carefully monitored. There are outcome data for several patient groups, which have been linked to patient peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) as the main outcome measure as opposed to method of oxygen delivery device.
