Case of the Month #53 AFLP

AFLP is a rare but severe complication of pregnancy:

• Incidence: Approximately 1 in 7,000 to 1 in 15,000 pregnancies
• Risk factors include:
  1. Primiparity (as in this case)
  2. Multiple gestation
  3. Male foetus
  4. Previous episode of AFLP
  5. Genetic factors (e.g., long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency)

While rare, the high mortality rate associated with AFLP (historically up to 18% for mothers and 23% for foetuses) underscores the importance of early recognition and management.
