What are the risk factors for HHS?

  • Elderly people/nursing home residents (although increasingly being seen in a younger population due to the ever-changing demographics of patients with T2DM)
  • Acute illness in a known patient with diabetes
  • Insufficient diabetic management (with oral hypoglycaemic agents and insulin)
  • Precipitating medications (such as corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, beta blockers etc which affect carbohydrate metabolism)
