Case of the Month #53 AFLP

Published 04/12/2024

Prognosis and Outcomes in cases of AFLP

The prognosis of AFLP has improved significantly with advances in critical care and earlier recognition:

  • Maternal mortality has decreased from 80-85% historically to 7-18% in recent years
  • Fetal mortality rates have improved from 50% to 9-23%

Factors influencing outcomes include:

  1. Time to diagnosis and delivery (if antenatal)
  2. Severity of liver dysfunction and coagulopathy
  3. Development of complications (e.g., sepsis, multi-organ failure)
  4. Access to advanced critical care facilities
  5. Presence of pre-existing medical conditions
