Intubation and ventilation reduce the energy needed for the increased work of breathing, helping to optimise oxygen delivery. A sedated patient also allows for easier insertion of lines and obtaining imaging. Ketamine and rocuronium are ideal agents in 1mg/kg doses with a morphine infusion prepared for ongoing sedation.
