Launch of New Guidance on Rotational Training in ICM
The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) is pleased to announce the publication of new national guidance:
“Maximising training opportunities and minimising the impact of rotational training within the ICM CCT Programme”.
Rotational training plays a vital role in delivering the wide range of experiences required to complete Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) training. However, it is increasingly recognised that frequent rotations can have unintended consequences for Intensivists in Training (IiTs) — from logistical challenges and disruption to personal life, to the impact on educational continuity, team integration, and overall wellbeing.
This new guidance has been developed in direct response to those concerns, combining insights from the ICM Curriculum, IiT feedback, and best practice examples from across the UK. It includes clear recommendations for:
- Reducing the frequency and disruption of rotations
- Improving communication and planning between regions and training programmes
- Supporting continuity in supervision and training experience
- Promoting IiT involvement in decisions about placements
- Highlighting the benefits of models such as the Single Lead Employer
The guidance is intended for all stakeholders involved in ICM training, including IiTs, Educational Supervisors, Faculty Tutors, Training Programme Directors, and those overseeing programme delivery in Deaneries and statutory education bodies.
We hope this publication will support improved training experiences for all IiTs and assist educators and programme leads in building on existing good practice.
