Unit Structure
  • Number of Beds: 24                              
  • Number of Admissions per year: Level 3 - 9, Level 2 - 15
  • Percentage of Elective vs Emergency Admissions: 20% elective vs 80% emergency.

 

Overview of Case Mix within the Unit:
  • Approximately 1900 admissions a year.
  • General adult ICU, though we will take 16–18-year-olds.
  • Provide support for a separate Maternity Enhanced Care Unit (MECU).
  • Unit HSMR is <100.
  • There is no split site working within this Unit

 

Research projects being undertaken within this Unit:

At any one time, the unit is signed up for most UK multi-centre trials. Traditionally, we have been one of the biggest recruiters to trials as a DGH. Trainees are encouraged to be Associate PI’s.

 

Overview of the staffing for the Unit (including medical, ACCP, AHPs)

12 ICU Consultants, expanding to 16 in 2025.

40 Resident Doctors (FY1, FY2, CT, ST, CTF, SAS). Accredited for ST7 training in ICM.

4 ACCP’s with another 4 in training.

Daily ward round supported by Microbiologist, Dietitian, Pharmacist & Physiotherapist.

 

Training

Training opportunities when working at this Unit:
  • Training in point of care ultrasound 
  • Opportunity to attend theatre for airway experience 
  • Exposure to paediatric emergencies 
  • Interhospital transfers 
  • Opportunity to attend a Cardiac Catheterisation lab 
  • Acting up as an ICM Consultant (for Stage 3 trainees) 
  • Other: Rehabilitation. We have a separate, dedicated rehab team for Critical Care (physiotherapist, OT, dietitian, psychologist, ACCP and intensivist)

 

Departmental Teaching:
  • Teaching for 2 hours every Wednesday afternoon.
  • Monthly Critical Care Sim session.
  • Weekly Faculty Tutor drop-in session where any issues can be dealt with.

 

Details of clinical governance meeting days and/or M & M:                             

QIP/M&M meeting once a month. All trainees are allocated a QIP when starting. All trainees are allocated a mortality review and taken through the SJR process with a senior. Attendance at inquests is encouraged as learning opportunities.

 

The medical specialties and subspecialties it is possible to complete within theTrust/Health Board:
  • Stage 1:  Emergency Medicine, Medicine & Anaesthesia   
  • Stage 2:  Nil
  • Which SSYs are offered in your unit:  QI in Healthcare   

 

Other facilities: 
  • On-site parking at nights/weekends. Off-site parking with shuttle bus at other times.
  • Gillingham Station is a 10-minute walk away.
  • 2 x on-call rest rooms for Critical Care Resident Doctors.
  • Out-of-hours hot food is from vending machines.
  • ICU Seminar Room and one office can be used for non-clinical workspace.
