Why do this quality improvement project?

There has been a shift in the emphasis of sedation practice away from the use of large doses of sedatives to the idea of analgosedation. Over-sedation can contribute to hypotension, venous thrombosis, prolonged ventilation, an increased risk for pneumonia and a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), with an increasing burden on staff, bed availability and associated costs.1,2
